Alan’s Message – September 2015

A warm welcome back to our staff & students! It's hard to believe that another summer is behind us and it’s once again time for back to school. After a whirlwind year of record breaking piano sales, exponential school growth, enhanced bands/ensembles and Enriched programs, video logs and expanded performance opportunities, it’s time to now look forward to our 28th year of unleashing the power of music in people’s lives. During the first week of September, Stu Harrison, Mary Ficzere and I met with hundreds of new parents and students who were taking their first steps towards learning the language of music. As we showed videos of the Merriam TRAK system and clips of our graduates performing along with parents talking about their experiences here, I felt a great sense of excitement for this next generation of music makers. More than ever before, I am confident that anyone who has learned how to speak a verbal language has ample skill and the talent to learn music at a level that will be truly life enhancing and meaningful. Music is a language, and when we teach it as such the results are remarkable but also predictable. Parents who understand and trust in the proven formula and who partner with us to help guide their children through the sometimes difficult stages of musical development, will achieve great success and satisfaction. It’s indeed a privilege to help facilitate the process and see the wonderful results unfold. I would also be remiss if I didn’t once again mention the dedication and skill of our management team, our administrators, sales representatives and faculty; they make the Merriam experience truly unique by their firm commitment to continually deliver wonderful results day in and day out. And to all the new, and not so new Merriam Music members, some words of advice; when at times you might feel weary or depleted during the journey, it's good to remember the words of Dumbledore, one of J K Rowling's characters in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. “Ah, music," he said, wiping his eyes. "A magic beyond all we do here!” Welcome back and here's to another great year of making music together! Alan Merriam
