When it comes to professional quality grand pianos approaching the 6-foot classic size marker, there’s no question that one of the world’s most popular comparisons is the Yamaha C2X vs Kawai GX2 Blak. Especially in North America, these two instruments are ubiquitous in post-secondary music institutions and other fine teaching studios.
In today's article and companion video, we're going to be comparing these two heavyweights. They're very similarly priced, similarly sized, and two of the most often discussed and compared instruments in the industry.
Whether you’re shopping on behalf of an educational institution, a performance venue or simply looking to invest in a great piano for your home in the 6-foot range, you will undoubtedly come across these two great pianos.
This is a 5'8" grand piano entirely built in Japan and is essentially an evolved version of the hugely successful Yamaha C2. In a lot of ways, the C2 evolved out of the more basic Yamaha G2, although they were technically considered two distinct product lines that were produced simultaneously for quite a number of years.
But there’s no denying that the C series definitely has an evolutionary root with the Yamaha G series, which was of course their first mainstream grand piano product that was brought into North America.
This means that a lot of people In North America grew up playing Yamaha G2s and G3s in schools, churches and in their homes. The C2X is the latest 5’8” professional-tier grand piano in this category.
Piano Sound
Yamaha's traditional tonal profile is often widely described as ‘bright’, and in recent years we’ve been hearing the term ‘crispy’ used as well. There are a couple of key reasons why Yamaha’s have always had a brighter sound;
One reason has been the way in which they've manufactured their hammers in the past, the type of wool selected, and the method by which the wool is then packed. There are also scale design choices that contribute to a brighter tonal profile as well.
Due to higher scale tension, they also use slightly shorter strings than comparably sized pianos from other manufacturers. All of these factors help produce a clear, punchy attack which when joined with a harder hammer results in a bright and after a period of time, potentially metallic tone.
Modern Updates
In recent years, Yamaha has really tried to dial down the brightness. One of the things they’ve done to accomplish this is to really change their approach to the hammers. The hammers in the C2X are now a little bit thicker and the felt is not quite as dense. The result is a dialled-down attack and less potential for morphing into that metallic tone over time.
Secondly, they have also changed the steel piano wire used in the treble and midsection of the piano. And there’s no doubt that this has been a pretty successful endeavour as the tone is definitely more colorful than the Yamaha grands of the past, though it’s definitely still on the bright side of the tonal spectrum.
Clarity
Another feature of the C2X’s tonal profile is a great sense of clarity, especially throughout the mid-range of the piano. This clarity is a big reason why Yamaha’s are often selected as favorites for recording since this translates very well to a microphone, whereas certain features often preferred for live performance such as warmth and a greater sense of depth don’t necessarily lend themselves to recording.
Thickened Rim
Another upgrade Yamaha has made with the C2X is the inclusion of a thicker rim than what was featured in the C2. This has really improved the overall projection of the instrument even though the rim is still not as thick as the Kawai GX2’s rim.
The “Break” Area
Another thing we always take note of here at Merriam Pianos, especially when talking about pianos that are less than six feet in length, is how well they deal with the “break” area - the transition area of the piano between the steel strings and copper strings.
The C2X is not as smooth in this regard as some other instruments available in this price or size range. There’s a distinct difference in the tonal color when transitioning through this area.
Voicing can improve this to some extent, but not entirely, so this is something to be aware of.
Piano Action
Light Touch Curve
The C2X features an action entirely designed and manufactured by Yamaha that could be best described as having a light touch curve - a term used when describing digital piano action settings. What we mean here is that it doesn’t take very much effort to get this piano really firing with volume.
This gives the player the impression that the action is weighted lightly, but it’s actually weighted about the same as the Kawai GX2’s action - the difference is that the top end of the volume range comes much faster here.
Some players will love this, but at the same time, the downside is that you lose control in the lower dynamic ranges since there’s simply less real estate to work with down there.
Repetition Speed
Yamaha’s actions are known for their great repetition speed, and that sentiment certainly holds true here. This is a very quick action - even demanding classic repertoire is certainly manageable with this action.
Ivorite Keytops
The C2X’s white key tops are made of Yamaha’s proprietary Ivorite composite material which both looks and feels like natural ivory. It also has the same moisture-absorbing properties as ivory as well so this is a nice feature.
Yamaha C2X Wrap Up
All in all, what we're looking at with the Yamaha C2X is a really well-built piano. The rim is slightly thicker than the previous C series, the treble strings are of higher quality, the tone is more colorful than Yamaha’s in the past if still bright, and the action is very fast while generating a ton of sound right away.
Kawai GX2 Grand Piano
The GX2 is the most commonly compared Kawai grand piano to the Yamaha C2X, but it’s actually 3 inches linger at 5'11". Due to the different scale design, the longest bass string on the GX2 is actually even longer than three inches more than what you get on the C2X.
This factor alone guarantees that the GX2 is producing a very different tone from the C2X, especially in the bass register.
Like the C2X, the GX series is also made in Japan, and is also an evolved version of a previous Kawai piano, in this case, the Kawai RX2.
That said, the GX2 can be more accurately thought of as a production version of the handmade Shigeru Kawai SK2, featuring the same general design and many of the same components.
Design Similarities to the Yamaha C2X
The GX2 and the C2X have a number of design similarities. For one, both feature V-pro plates. This means that instead of the plates being sand-cast, they are cast using a more precise process. The GX2 also uses the double felted hammers, which Yamaha has switched to with the C2X, and this softens the attack and helps prevent the tone from becoming metallic.
Another similarity between these two instruments is they both use duplex scaling. As a result, the treble on both pianos is very nice and clear, though it’s slightly more complex on the GX2. Both pianos feature multi-laminated pinblocks, soft-fall fallboards and large music racks.
Beyond these things, the differences really start to emerge. We’ll start looking at those first as they pertain to the piano sound.
Piano Sound
The first thing that becomes really obvious when playing in the lower dynamic ranges is that the GX2 has a much more active cabinet and soundboard than the C2X. The GX2 uses a solid spruce tapered soundboard, while the C2X features an un-tapered soundboard - this is a key reason for the difference in cabinet and soundboard activation.
Tapered Solid Spruce Soundboard
Tapering refers to a process wherein a soundboard is precisely thinned out towards the edges of its circumference. This frees the soundboard up to resonate more lively, even at low dynamic levels. It also allows for better sustain and cabinet activation.
Tapering is fairly costly, though it is generally regarded as a best practice. The overwhelming majority of top-tier European hand-made pianos feature tapered soundboards, and even Yamaha’s upper-level SX and CF series grands feature tapered soundboards, so it’s not the case that we’re simply looking at differing philosophies in soundboard design here.
Konsei Katagi Rim
Kawai in general is known for their warm and oftentimes darker tone, and this is very apparent with the GX2, which also happens to be a very dynamic and colorful piano. Of course, the overall quality of the traditional craftsmanship is a factor here as is the presence of agraffes, Kawai’s unique Konsei Katagi rim is a big reason why as well.
The Konsei Katagi rim combines layers of different hardwoods to optimize and balance the tone. The inner rim features interlaminated small pore hardwoods for projection and large pore hardwoods for warmth, all equaling out to nothing short of superb tonal depth.
Action
Another huge difference between these two pianos is the feel, which of course primarily relates to the piano's actions.
These two instruments feel very different from one another, and if you have some experience playing piano, odds are you’ll have a preference as to which one you prefer. In fact, even beginners will probably feel a pretty big difference here.
Where the C2X gets loud quite quickly, the GX2 takes requires more effort to get firing, which creates the perception that it’s a heavier action. Like we said above, they’re actually fairly evenly weighted, but the extra level of control the GX2 is easily mistaken for heaviness.
Extended Length Key-Sticks
The Kawai GX2 features keysticks that have been extended beyond the normal length for a 6-foot piano. They aren't quite concert-length, but they're about an inch and a quarter longer than the keys on the C2X and what were previously on the Kawai RX2.
The difference to the player is that you’re getting to work with a longer lever which is going to deliver more power, torque and touch control in the extreme dynamic ranges - both soft and loud.
Concert grands are the most dynamic type of grand piano, and the considerably longer key sticks are a critical reason why.
Millennium III Action
Beyond the key-stick length, the action design and componentry are also very different between these two grand pianos.
The C2X features a fairly traditional wood-based action. Conversely, the GX2 features the ABS-Carbon Fiber reinforced Millennium III action - the same action featured in the premium handcrafted Shigeru series of grand pianos.
Kawai has been experimenting with eschewing wood for composite action parts for decades, and there are a number of reasons for this. For one, carbon fiber-reinforced parts simply don't shrink and expand with temperature and humidity changes.
This means that from a maintenance standpoint, this action is going to be more stable over a longer period of time and provide an overall more consistent touch than a similarly priced wooden action.
This action is also known for its lightning-fast repetition and keystroke speed - this is a big reason why the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand has become an increasingly popular choice with top-level concert pianists, converting even previously die-hard Steinway enthusiasts.
Neotex Key Surfaces
Like the C2X, the GX2’s action also features synthetic key textures on both the white and black keys made to imitate the touch, feel and absorptive qualities of real ivory. In Kawai’s case, they refer to this texture as Neotex.
Keybed
The GX2 also has a deeper, steel-reinforced keybed which allows the player to dig in a little bit further and take advantage of those extended-length keysticks. The keyslip is also steel reinforced.
Kawai GX-2 Wrap Up
The Kawai GX2 is also a very well-built piano. In comparison to the C2X, you’re getting a warmer, darker sound here that is also more colorful.
The Millennium III action also has some inherent mechanical advantages over the C2X’s action, but a preference will really come down to whether you want the more immediate power of the C2X, or more control that the GX2 offers.
Yamaha C2X vs Kawai GX2 - Closing Thoughts
This pretty much sums up the major musical differences between these instruments. In terms of quality of build, it’s pretty much dead even here - these are both extremely well-built instruments, and that’s the reputation both of these companies have for their grand and upright pianos.
We’ve laid out the particular nuances of each piano, so selecting one is going to come down to determining the best musical companion for you or your institution based on your needs.
The Kawai GX-2 certainly has a broader pallet that lends itself to classical music and certain inherent maintenance-related advantages due to the action, but on the other hand, the Yamaha C2X is going to lend itself better to recording and might be a better piano for pop music.

Let's start with some background information and context.
Background
There’s a list of commonly asked questions that piano dealers get asked every single day. The most frequent are things like digital or acoustic? Upright or grand? Kawai or Yamaha?
Beyond these staple questions, there are some model match-up questions that we often get as well, questions pertaining to the differences between the Kawai GX-2 vs GX-3 are quite common as well.
For a good number of people, their piano buying journey comes down to these two instruments. The GX line is very popular in the modern marketplace and is often compared to say, the Boston GP series (designed by Steinway but built by Kawai in Japan) and Yamaha’s CX series.
The GX line also sometimes gets positioned against the Yamaha S Series in markets where the Yamaha dealers have been forced to more heavily discount, and sometimes people will consider the GX line against Eastern European options.
Why is the GX Line so Popular?
The GX line is so well regarded among industry critics, musicians and institutions because it’s unanimously considered a very high-performing, high-value series of instruments.
When you look at the spec sheet for the Kawai GX-2 vs GX-3, they both read as though you’re looking at a European concert grand piano. In fact, the GX-2 and GX-3 are essentially factory reproductions of the handmade Shigeru Kawai SK-2 and SK-3 respectively.
Front and rear duplex scaling, vertically laminated bridges, special Konsei Katagi outer and inner rims with blended hard rock maple mahogany hardwoods, tapered solid spruce soundboards, V-Pro plates, steel-reinforced keyslips and keybed, extra wide stretcher bars and the list goes on.
Differences from the RX Line
The GX series came out close to 10 years ago now and were released as slightly larger updates to the hugely successful RX-2 and RX-3. The reason for the additional size was due to a slight thickening in the rims and lengthening of the keysticks as the newest version of Kawai’s Millennium III Carbon Fiber action features extended-length keysticks for better control.
For example, at 5’11” the GX-2 is classic salon grand size-wise, but the action will feel more like a 6’6” piano while the 6’2” GX-3 will feel closer to a 7-footer.
The other main upgrade over the RX series and an overall improved cabinet design and new hard finish that is both better looking and more durable.
Key Differences Between the Kawai GX-2 vs GX-3
Despite very similar-looking specs sheets aside from the 3-inch size difference, the GX-3 lists for a substantial $12,000 USD higher than the GX-2. This is due to the fact that Kawai manufactures many more GX2’s as compared to the GX-3, and as such, the GX-3 simply doesn’t have the economy of scale.
Now, if you actually have a GX-2 and GX-3 side by side and take a close look at them, you’ll notice some beam support differences when you look underneath both pianos. The GX-3 has a slightly more intricate cabinet which delivers a greater degree of cabinet resonance.
Otherwise, the differences between these two pianos are purely musical and result from the size differences since components such as the hammers, pinblock and agraffes are all the same, whereas the larger soundboard, strings, rim etc. result in different musical experiences.

Sonic Differences
Musically speaking, there are a few things widely observed about the GX series as a whole that definitely apply here.
For example, the sustain on both of these instruments is exceptionally good for factory-produced instruments. The treble on both of these instruments is strong and thick with a very well-defined fundamental and yet lots of color too.
The biggest tonal differences start to emerge as soon as you get below concert A down around middle C. The “break” is a little bit smoother on the GX-3, and there’s greater warmth in the bass register. It’s also fair to say that the sound is slightly more open overall on the GX-3 as well.
Let’s expand on these observations and go register by register.
Bass Register
Interestingly, the GX-2 actually offers slightly better rim activation in that lower octave and while the mics we used for the video probably won’t pick this up, you can definitely hear this in person.
Both bass registers offer a similar level of projection, but we’re hearing more of the fundamental on the GX-3 due to the longer strings.
“Break” Area
One of the most significant differences as we move up through the range is the “break” area as we mentioned above. The “break” on the GX-3 is more controlled than the GX-2, and largely, this is a function of the extra string length.
The longer you can make a string, the cleaner you can make that transition.
Moving to the second octave up from the bottom, and there's a lot more of the third and fourth partial coming from strings on the GX-2 than the GX-3. If you play a good amount of repertoire within that particular range of the piano this could be a significant consideration.
Mid & Treble Ranges
Once we move up into the mid and treble ranges, the GX-3 is a little bit more colourful, although the GX-2 still sounds really great with lots of warmth.
GX-2 through this range offers more of a direct sound with less of a cabinet resonance but a more direct soundboard tone.
At the very top of both pianos, differences are almost indistinguishable from one another, which makes sense as the string length up here is basically the same.
Feel and Response
Millennium III Carbon Fiber Action
Both pianos are receiving the same ABS-Carbon composite action - the Millennium III Carbon Fiber action. Both pianos come very well regulated from the factory, and the voicing is generally very good out of the box as well.
The Millennium III action is without question one of the key selling features for the GX series musical instruments, especially for institutions where whose pianos will be receiving intensive use. Carbon Fiber reinforced plastic is more durable than the wood used in other actions at this price point and less temperamental.
Extended Length Key Sticks
At the same time, the repetition speed is extremely good, as is the responsiveness. The extended-length key sticks we mentioned earlier come into effect by providing the player with a greater level of control than they could normally reasonably expect out of a similarly sized piano.
Both pianos feature Neotex Key Surfaces on both the white and black keys, and this is another composite material that mimics the moisture-absorbing qualities of genuine ivory.
Final Thoughts
Summarizing the Musical Differences
The key musical differences between these the Kawai GX-2 vs GX-3 can be summed up as follows; The GX-3 offers more fundamental tone in the lower registers than the GX-2 and a little bit more power, but the overall character is actually quite similar.
As we move into the second octave, the GX-3 has a smoother “break” area, meaning there are fewer of those metallic harmonics coming through that often appear in this part of a grand piano.
In the third octave, the Kawai GX-2 is actually producing more cabinet resonance, and the treble areas are quite similar. This means that if you happen to play a lot of music that’s confined to the mid and upper registers, you’re not going to be sacrificing anything if you opt for a GX-2 as opposed to a GX-3.
On the other hand, if the extra bass presence, power and projection of the GX-3 are important to you, it’s well worth the premium.
Finishes & Aesthetic Features
Both pianos are most commonly sold in a polished ebony finish, but both are also available in satin ebony. That’s it for the GX-3, but as the bigger seller, the GX-2 is available in a variety of additional finishes including Walnut, Cherry and Oak Satin, as well as Snow White Polish, and Walnut and Sapeli Mahogany.
In terms of other aesthetic considerations, both pianos feature soft fall fallboards, as well as brass pedals and lid props.

The Shigeru Kawai grand piano series is the very top musical product that Kawai produces. Over the years, the Shigeru Kawai series has essentially functioned as a testbed for various experimental piano building techniques and new technology, with a gradual trickle-down effect wherein features pioneered in the Shigeru pianos have ended up throughout the entire Kawai musical instrument lineup.

Fact #1: The Rim
The rim of any grand piano has several roles to play, including tonal projection, the stability of construction, the stability of tuning, and overall durability/longevity of the piano as a whole. Fact #2: The Wood/Soundboard
Kawai uses solid spruce for the soundboards for all of their pianos, but with the SK-7 and SK-EX, they use select Ezo spruce from a small remaining stockpile. The process used to dry this spruce truly defies all economic sense; rather than using kilns or any other accelerating drying methods whatsoever, this spruce is dried in open air dry racks for well in excess of 5 years before the wood is worked with at all. This ensures maximum stability in a variety of climate conditions and greatly reduces the possibility of the wood splitting. Very few companies engage in a process this time-consuming.
Fact #3: The Bridges
The bridges in the Shigeru Kawai pianos, according to several Kawai insiders, are essentially reproductions of the Hamburg Steinway bridge design. This isn’t something you’ll find in a press release, but unofficially, this happens to be the case as the Hamburg Steinway bridge design is viewed by many as the absolutely optimal way to design a bridge.
These bridges are vertically laminated and utilize a variety of different woods. Where Shigeru again stands among only very few manufacturers, is that they feature a different wood for the treble bridge cap from the mid and bass ranges. Shigeru’s use boxwood in the treble bridge due to the immense amount of string tension in the treble bridge. Maple is used in the mid and and bass range.
Fact #4: Double Duplex Scaling
Another interesting thing about Shigeru’s is the use of double duplex scaling, which means not only a duplex length on the back of the bridge but also a duplex length on the front of the piano as well, just in front of the capo. This results in an incredibly colourful treble range. Often, even with super expensive pianos, the upper treble can sound a bit ‘noisy’, meaning uncontrolled or out of tune harmonics, and a hue of white noise surrounding the fundamental pitch. Utilizing the double duplex and managing the avoid this pitfall truly speaks to the precision these pianos are built with.
Fact #5: Keystick Length
It’s fairly common knowledge that the Shigeru’s feature Kawai’s famous Millenium III Carbon Fiber action equipped with Shiko Seion hammers, an action originally designed specifically for the Shigeru’s which has now trickled down all throughout Kawai’s lineup.
What’s not so common knowledge is what Kawai has done with the keystick lengths; every Shigeru Kawai, from the SK-2 to the SK-7, has the exact same keystick length as the 9 foot SK-EX concert grand. What advantage does this give? Well for concert level pianists, having a 6 foot piano in the home that can approximate quite closely the feel of a 9 foot concert grand is of course hugely advantageous. For everyone else, the extended keystick reduces the difference in repetition speed and the sense of weight between the front of the key and the back of the key. This means, these actions are much easier to play on any part of the key.
Fact #6: How the Action is Prepared
Again, it’s fairly common knowledge that Kawai actions across the entire line come directly out of the factory very well prepped and regulated. It remains mostly an unknown however how Kawai achieves this.
Every piano action utilizes a pounding machine that piano actions are placed inside of prior to installation, where the keys are played over and over again to break them in. An average traditional piano action typically has a lifespan of about 1 million, to 1.3 million strikes before the action disintegrates. With a Shigeru action, each key is played several hundred thousand times in the pounding machine prior to installation to ensure that it is thoroughly worked in and regulated dozens of times throughout this process. Due to the carbon fiber action, the lifespan vastly exceeded the 1-1.3 million limit of a traditional action, which allows Kawai to work the action into this extreme degree.
Fact #7: The Finishing Touches
There are several walls at the Shigeru Kawai factory adorned by plaques. Each plaque has a name, location and year. The name’s on these plaques are every single owner of a new Shigeru Kawai piano, which the Shigeru Kawai Master Piano Artisans take great pride in. This connection between the builder and end user is a true rarity in our industrial, globalized world, and serves as a motivation for the pursuit of perfection with every Shigeru.
Fact #8: Master Piano Artisan Connection
Not only will the person who put the piano together know the name of the buyer, but the buyer will know the name of the craftsman as well. Each Shigeru Kawai piano comes with a certificate with a signature and short biography on the specific Master Piano Artisan (MPA) who was responsible for overseeing that particular instruments craftsmanship, from beginning to end.
Fact #9: Batch Made
Due to the precise and time-consuming nature of these instruments, only a couple of hundred Shigeru Kawai pianos are built each year. Rather than constructing all of the different models at once, Shigeru’s are built in single batches, as an attempt to maintain focus and uniformity. Rather than scattering attention, the entire team is focused on the exact same intention throughout the entire process.
Fact #10: Visit from Piano Artisan
One of the Master Piano Artisans involved in the building of the Shigeru’s will actually visit each individual owners’ home within one year of purchasing a Shigeru to service the instrument for an entire day. There is no other manufacturer who offers this service standard with every purchase, and further serves as a powerful symbol of unending devotion each MPA has towards their craft. This varies from market to market based on the availability of the MPA’s, but it’s certainly something all of our Shigeru customers here at Merriam Music are fortunate to experience.
